Sports in Pattaya - Tennis, Golf, Go Karting, etc

Outdoor activities are one of the reasons many people living in Bangkok make the journey south to Pattaya at weekends and on public holidays. There is a wide range of sports, and most are available without having to be member of a club.

Golf

The area around Pattaya has a good number of quality golf courses and most are open to non members at relatively low green fee rates. As an example the Life Country Club has a Par 72 course designed by Nick Faldo, with a weekday green fee of 660 Baht, which equates to US$20 or €15.

One of the more expensive courses is the Laem Chabang course, designed by Jack Nicklaus, but even here the fees are quite low (2,500 Baht) compared with a similar standard in the US or Europe.

Other courses where golfers can enjoy fantastic surroundings, challenging golf and great facilities are:

The Pheonix Golf Course; Green Fee: 1000 Baht
Siam Country Club: Green Fees 1100 Baht
St Andrews 2000: Green Fees 650 Baht
Natural Park Resort: Green Fee 1,100 Baht
Noble Place Golf & Country Club: Green Fee 750 Baht

In total there are 15 courses in the region between Sriracha and Jomtien, so there’s plenty to choose from.

All the fees quoted are weekday tee off’s. In Asia and Thailand caddies are mandatory, so an average 200 baht has to be added.

They will be good golfers in their own right and can advise on the course. It is also recommended that a golf cart is used, since walking the course in the high humidity often found in the region can be hard work. Plenty of for water also helps to make a pleasant days golf.

Beach Activities

Pattaya beach is far better than it used to be with a good deal of money spent on tidying the place up, and providing better facilities for sun worshippers and sea enthusiasts.

This is also true of Jomtien beach, which is quieter and more refined than Pattaya.

Sport activities on the beach and in the sea are swimming, snorkeling, banana boat rides, para sailing, jet skiing and windsurfing. Beach chairs can be rented out, for the day, so there’s some shade when it all gets to hot.

Many visitors enjoy a foot massage whilst laying there in the sun, whilst vendors come by selling barbequed tiger prawns, ice creams and other treats.

Tennis

Quire recently some new tennis facilities have sprung up, partly due to the staging of a few international tennis events In Pattaya. Several major men’s and women’s competitions are held here annually. The Dusit Thani has 3 excellent tennis courts, recently put in amongst the gardens of the hotel. The Royal Cliff hotel has 7 courts.

Go Karting

Close to the main Sukhumvit Road at Thep Prasit Rd is the Pattaya Speedway Track. There are 2 tracks with 50cc and 100cc karts for rent from 250 Baht with an additional "off road" karting track. There's even the option of a family kart. The site has a bungee jump so this is a place where a few adventure sports can be enjoyed in one place

Flying Clubs

What may seem a fanciful idea, but is quite possible in Pattaya is taking a short trip out to see the sights from a light aircraft. There is a club where visitors can take short flying courses or can hire an aircraft for a scenic flight.

Inland from the main road from Bangkok is the Thai Flying Club which operates from a small airfield at Bang Pra. For a general flight there is an hourly charge, which can be as low as 7,000 Baht. The pilot will discuss any routes or places a visitor many want to see prior to take off.

At the airfield there is a small restaurant alongside the airstrip, and a very friendly atmosphere. One of the pilots is an American who never went home!!

Yachting and Sailing

Enthusiasts of this sport and activity will be pleased to know there are some excellent faculties near Pattaya, at Jomtien. The largest of the clubs is the Ocean marina, where there are full yachting facilities, plus tennis, pools, gym, snooker and squash.

In a more secluded cove just outside the main Jomtien area is the Veruna Yacht Club. Temporary membership and boat rental is available at low cost
